Happy Mother's Day!

I made this for my mum five years ago, shortly after she moved to Hong Kong. She seemed very far away that Mother's Day, but when she opened the parcel over Skype, and burst out crying with joy, I was so pleased! (We seem to have a competition to make each other cry to mark a successful present-giving!).

I had taken a couple of fabrics from her sewing box... The honeysuckle fabric was from her favourite curtains when I was a teenager, the yellow and green floral was from her mother's sewing box, the green Liberty print she had bought me years ago and nothing ever seemed special enough to cut into it for! I think the brown is a 70's Laura Ashley, anyway, little bits of it were always in my childhood sewing projects!

It was the first proper layered and quilted quilt I ever made on my own, and I'm still so pleased to see it on her bed whenever I visit her, with the corner turned to display the message embroidered there: from Much Wenlock to Hong Kong, with love from Holly on Mothers Day xx

It reminds me a lot of the quilt we made together for her mum when I was a child. That quilt now sits folded on the chair in the hallway at my mums house, the chair she nursed us children on, and the quilts tie together the generations, the women of our family geographically close, or far away, or moved on to another plane, like layers in a quilt.

I hope one day the coming generations will hold these quilts and feel the same.
